For many people, getting started is the most difficult step to family history work. It shouldn't be. Technology has made the process easy. Here is a step-by-step tutorial to get you on your way.

1. Collect the names of your most recent ancestors that have passed away. For most people this is grandparents. This is going to be your starting point.

2. Download the PAF program for free. Click the following link to do so: Personal Ancestral File

3. Now start the research. Go to www.familysearch.org

4. Enter the name of the most recent ancestor that has died. It is best if you enter as much information in this search page. Hit enter and the site will return the results. You must choose the name that matches your ancestor. Click the name.

5. Click "Pedigree" in the right hand corner.
